Internet - a flavour of 1994...

You could say the Internet exploded in 1994, but it was more like the UK mass media picked up on the idea and it self- ignited. Newspaper journos realised that they could sit at their desks staring at their computer screens, looking like they were working when really they were sending email across the globe, surfing newsgroups and browsing virtual picture libraries.

The results were immediate: tons of coverage of the Net in almost all areas of the press, transcriptions of email conferences passing for features in the serious papers and exposes of computer-porn in the not-so-serious papers. Expect more of this in '95 and more head-scratching from the 'average' wo/man in the street who's wondering what all the fuss is about.

The thing is, in the UK about 99% of the media have Internet access compared to about 1% of the general public. This has lead to one of the most unlikely characters hitching a ride on the infobahn and proclaiming its virtues to the bemused masses:
mark.goodier@1fm.co.uk! Whatever next,
jimmy.saville@jewellery.jewellery. jewellery.com?!

Predictions for 1995...

With more and more musicians accessing the Internet for communication (email) and sending music (ISDN) between themselves and fans, record companies could be redundant very soon. If not next year perhaps by the end of the decade...

Also, a clandestine political community will evolve on the Internet, shut away from the real world in a virtual political existence. They will be known as the Conservative party. On a music tip '95 could mean Jungle for the masses, a quiet ambient explosion, world music to get mainstream coverage, new albums from Sylvian (with Ingrid Chavez), Wendy & Lisa (with Trevor Horn), Stephen Duffy (rumoured to be his best since The Lilac Time debut), an Indie supergroup, Indian rap bands, the rebirth of techno, the Sausages Of Mars (Holly Johnson and Sonia) to reform, Madonna to be discovered as having died two years ago...

Put my needle back in the groove...

Take me back to ON...
