David Toop, writer, musician

1994 was the most open, dynamic year for music for a very long time. Not everything was good, or even memorable, but the pieces seemed to blow up into the air and then fall down in different shapes at least once a month. Experiment now seems the norm in almost every genre and musicians are communicating despite their differences.

In 1995, I believe that collaborations will flourish, some of them too bizarre to currently consider. This could jump music forward, not just artistically, but draw connections across more genres of music and strengthen the business prospects for musicians, club promoters, label owners and media innovators who have survived this far on goodwill and a prayer. Listening to some of the jungle releases for January, for example - D* Note's 'Criminal Justice' album or The 2G's (Guy Called Gerald/Goldie) 'Energy' single, I can't imagine many people wanting to play safe.

Put my needle back in the groove...

Take me back to ON...
