Dr. Paul Elwood, is a former member of the Witchita, Kansas band The Sons of Rayon. And he is carrying on the group's specialty: Velcro tap-dancing. He is an avant-garde classical composer and member of "chamber rock groups" The Instrumental Factor and Random Axe. But this summer Elwood toured Europe and Ireland on the strength of his singular ripping rhythm.
He's always careful to credit the actual invention of the form to fellow Son Kelly Werts. But it is Elwood who still carries on the strange dance form. How does it actually work? Just the way he describes it: "Fred Astaire placed pressure DOWNARDS so he could get a sound. This way, you get the sound by pulling UP."
Basically, says Elwood, you have to stay in "real good shape." What are his personal secrets? "T'ai Chi, Zen meditation, John Cage, and lots of reading."
