Naked Girl Falling Down The Stairs succeeds Ultra Twist as the second video off The Cramps' new album, Flamejob.Unseen as yet in Europe, it is already in rotation on MTV America's 120 Minutes.
Lux likes the tune because he says it pays homage to their favourites, the Surrealists, and specific paintings like "The Bride Stripped Bare".
"Painting and film titles often turn into lyrics for us. And Marcel Duchamp is a special inspiration on the new album. So is Man Ray...he kind of single-handedly demolished all that had gone before and made a new art."
Says Poison Ivy, it's about release through style.
"That's right, a surreal viewpoint kinda suits Lux. When he's onstage, he gets very animal-like. he's very unrepressed; his animal side comes out quite naturally. But he expresses himself with a special style. this isn't something you see in many people..."
Nor do you see many vegans like The Cramps. But there's a lot, says Lux, people don't know about them.
"Yeah, like I was in love with Joan Baez! When I was really young, there were no record stores where I lived...so I got things from the library. On the one hand, they had John Philip Souza; on the other, they had Joan Baez. Now that IS surreal. That would make a nouveau surrealist out of anyone."
Nor did the album-cover crush end with Joanie.
"Nah, but I was really in love with her on the first album. Her picture was so pretty. See - it's pictures again! Nico came later. I was in love with HER, too, cause of the sleeve on her album."
Then...Lux found Ivy. It was kismet.
"Or kiss my ass! she had on a pair of shorts wit a big hole in the ass where her red panties showed. I said, 'OK, I'm gonna stop HERE!'"
Naked Girl Girl Falling Down The Stairs was directed by Jimmy Maslon, a longtime Cramps fan and vintage-film collector. In addition to directingUltra Twist, Maslon donated the nudie-film clips seen in its X-rated version. In the new video, he comes up with a minimal style, stark angles and sexy twists which fully match these lyrics by Lux:
"Yeah there was a naked girl
Right in my face
High class culture all over the place!
My watch stopped tickin'
Shoes came unlaced
When I watched her tripping'
Down the staircase..."
