Bhangle, the fresh new fusion of bhangra and Hindi musics with hip-hop beats and crazy samples, is going from strength to strength -- and place to place. The Winner of our last competition, Jay Novello, notes that the tapes are top in in his North Carolina grocery. (Jay recommends the Dutch CD compilation Jungle Fever. He also rates Panjabi MC's The CD on Nachural Records -- which contains a recycling of the TV theme tune for the show "Murder She Wrote".
Certainly the new sound continues pouring out of East London. The Unknown DJs tape starts with a streets-of-London update from CNN.
Then it offers shout-outs to compatriots in New York, San Diego and Chicago. Mystery surrounds the Unknown DJs' The Trilogy. But there's time to check out their current E-Eagle Mix: the original concept.
Tu Cheez Bami Hai Mast Mast (E-Eagle Mix tape)
One bond between bhunglist and lover's rock descendants (such as Soul II Soul and Massive Attack) is, of course, the central importance of a female vocalist. In Asian music, this takes on huge dimensions. Just listen to E-Eagle. Or to the brand-new -- if more traditional -- Hindi tapes such as Lover's Magic. Lover's Magic features Deepa Singh, Britain's 1991 Hindi Film Female Singer of the Year. (It also ends with a track called "Saxual Healing" and its very own brand of "Junglee Remix").
Meanwhile, those perplexed by the exact lyrics of Bollywood Mix One can now check out Hey! Girl In Miniskirt: a BILINGUAL tape which reveals some of the best-seller's linguistic secrets as well as, shall we say, a certain touching naivete.
